News coming through that the DUP have again delayed their selection meeting which is to be held to select their parties candidate for the June 2009 European election. The deadline for submitting your name to be considered is now apparently the 23rd January, with no fixed date for the meeting itself.
I reported rumours previously that Cllr Nigel Dodds MP MLA was going to be standing for the DUP. Everything has gone quite quiet from the DUP on this issue and surely as the biggest party they should not be finding it as hard as it appears to be to get candidates to put their name forward.

Oh dear...you'd think they'd be lining up for a chance to cover themselves in glory for Ulster and Robbo and all those meal expenses. They could always put an advert in The Newsletter I suppose if they still continue to struggle beyond April.
The DUP didn't select its candidate until the end of February in 2004 so there is nothing unusual about the time-scale.

FD,
I just find it amusing. Last time round the DUP were under no pressure to select and the momentum was already firmly with them.
This time there is an urgency, there is a threat that wasn't there before and they don't have an incumbent in the elk of Rev. Ian Paisley.

"I just find it amusing."
We all have to find our entertainment where we can.
Although I think the speculation is more to do with there simply being less news to report so things that previously attracted little attention now do.
"Last time round the DUP were under no pressure to select"
Err Paisley standing down didn't create a 'pressure' situation?
"This time there is an urgency, there is a threat that wasn't there before and they don't have an incumbent in the elk of Rev. Ian Paisley."
Why is there an urgency?
They didn't have an incumbent last time and it went fine. Also I believe you over-estimate the degree of threat.
The DUP will be down because of Allister but the electoral outcome of who gets a seat is the most likely the same (especially as the SDLP's campaign looks so poor) although SF would be favourite to top the poll. Thankfully the UUP/Tories have re-selected Jim Nicholson hobbling the challenge from that side.
The only other unknown is the 'Centre' candidate, if they find someone as good as they did the last time JN's challenge will be even more weakened.
If the rumour mill gets it right then inviting Eleanor Gill to the UUP conference won't have been such a good idea.
